Nutricost Krill Oil 1000 mg omega-3 supplement bottle with 60 softgels

Overview

Krill oil is a supplement that is rapidly gaining popularity as an alternative to fish oil. It is made from krill, a type of small crustacean consumed by whales, penguins and other sea creatures. Krill oil is high in important omega-3 fatty acids and has several potential health benefits. Krill oil is one of several omega-3 supplements, alongside fish oil, cod liver oil and algal oil.

What the evidence says about omega-3s (EPA and DHA), according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements:

  • Heart: getting more EPA and DHA from foods or supplements lowers triglyceride levels. The American Heart Association does not recommend omega-3 supplements for people who do not have a high risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Brain: some, but not all, research links eating more omega-3s from food such as fish with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia; more study is needed.
  • Eyes: people who get more omega-3s from food may have a lower risk of age-related macular degeneration, but supplements do not slow the disease once someone has it.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: some trials show omega-3 supplements may help manage it when taken together with standard medicines.
  • Pregnancy: it is not clear whether EPA and DHA supplements in pregnancy or breastfeeding affect a baby’s health or development.
  • Other conditions: more research is needed.

Safety: side effects are usually mild: an unpleasant taste, bad breath, heartburn, nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, headache and smelly sweat. High doses may cause bleeding problems when taken with warfarin or other anticoagulant medicines, so talk to your health care provider about your medicines. The US FDA recommends no more than 5 g a day of EPA and DHA combined from supplements. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
